Empowering Communities to Fight Familial Exploitation Alongside Survivors.

Familial exploitation involves family members selling their minor children for money, drugs, or something else of value.  Manufacturing and exchanging child pornography also falls under this category. Although it is a known fact that child sex trafficking is often perpetrated by family members, limited research has been done on this type of sexual exploitation by the survivor community.  SAFE was started in 2019 in order to close the gap in the anti-trafficking movement by bringing together adult survivors of familial exploitation & CSEC in a collaborative effort to end the trafficking of very young children.

Identification

Families who exploit their children commercially often have many adversities, dysfunctions, and disorders that create a household dynamic of coercion and secrecy, making identification and intervention incredibly difficult.  These children often attend school, church, and other community functions, but go unnoticed as needing assistance. While identification is difficult, it is not impossible.

Intervention

If you suspect a child is being commercially exploited, please call your local child abuse hotline, your non-emergency police department, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as well as the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Please do not try to intervene yourself, as you could make the situation worse for the child.

Restoration

Recovery from exploitation at the hands of a family member is a life-long process.  Victims being identified and removed from their trafficker is just the start of the recovery process.  Thus, identification should be considered the initial goal rather than the end goal.
